“The Benefit of Volunteering”

R.K. worked in an art gallery before she had children. After not working for 14 years, R.K. knew that she wanted to stay in the art world but was unsure in what forum or capacity. R.K. then attended an MYOBMoms Seminar in which we emphasized volunteering as a low-risk, high-reward means to test out different career options. Motivated by that presentation, R.K. began volunteering at an art gallery one day a week. R.K. enjoyed the experience of working, but realized that she wanted to work in a more social environment.  R.K.’s gallery work helped her get a job as a docent at the Museum of Modern Art where she is now a candidate for a paying job in the Education Department. Volunteering enabled R.K. to test the waters without risking failure. At the same time, it provided a useful stepping-stone to the job she wants.

“Have Confidence in Your Abilities”

L.K. worked in retail before she had children. During her parenting years she ran a small accessories business from home. L.K.’s true calling, however, was fashion. She was always in demand to help her friends shop and dress for special occasions, and assist with closet reorganization.  Although many friends suggested that she become a personal stylist, L.K. lacked the confidence.  L.K. attended an MYOBMoms seminar that featured a panel of women who transitioned back to work, including an engineer-turned-stylist.  Hearing that presentation gave L.K. the confidence to start her own business as a personal stylist, and she is now on her road to success.
